Choosing a trek

Short treks in Nepal: three different starting points

Compare Dhampus and Australian Camp, Poon Hill and Mardi Himal. See why a short holiday and an easy walking itinerary are different questions.

Start with the days you can actually walk

A short Nepal holiday does not necessarily give you the same number of days on the trail. Write down arrival, onward travel, transfers to the start and the return journey before comparing trek names. Leave space for the things that are not entirely under your control.

Three options in our collection make useful starting points for this discussion. They are different trip shapes, not interchangeable recommendations.

OptionWhat to investigateThe question to settle first
Dhampus and Australian CampA day outing or overnight village walk near PokharaWhat are the exact start, finish and uphill walking requirements?
Ghorepani Poon HillA short multi-day trek with a viewpoint objectiveHow are climbs, overnight stops and transfers spread across the days?
Mardi HimalA shorter mountain itinerary with a higher objectiveIs the endpoint a viewpoint, high camp or base camp?

Shorter can mean more concentrated

An agency can make a package shorter in several ways: use a different start, remove a village, lengthen a walking day or count travel days separately. Ask what changed. A shorter version of the same route is not automatically the better use of your holiday.

Compare your recent walking experience with the longest proposed day. Consider how you felt the following morning on your own walks; repeated days can be a different challenge from one enjoyable outing. A directory filter can organize options, but it cannot assess your personal response to a route or altitude.

Use a simple shortlist rule

Choose two options that offer the kind of experience you want. Request the same information from each operator: a day-by-day itinerary, overnight locations, walking-time ranges, transport arrangements and what happens if you need a slower pace.

If the trip only works when every transfer and walking day runs perfectly, ask for a less compressed option. You can also choose a smaller walk and spend the remaining time elsewhere in Nepal. A first trek does not need a base-camp title to be worthwhile.
