What to ask a trekking agency
Compare trekking agencies using the actual itinerary, inclusions, guide arrangements and change terms. Use this checklist before accepting a quotation.
Compare the written trip, not just the headline price
Two quotations for the same named trek may cover different journeys. Before deciding which is better value, ask each agency to explain the same details in writing.
The itinerary
Request the start and finish points, all overnight stops, walking and travel days, optional excursions and planned flexibility. Ask what experience the itinerary expects and which day is likely to be most demanding.
If you would join a group, ask about the group size, pace arrangements and what happens when participants have different needs.
Who is responsible?
Confirm the agency's legal business identity and relevant current permissions through appropriate official records. Ask who provides the guiding, how the guide is assigned, and whom you contact before and during the trip.
A directory entry is an introduction, not a guarantee. A useful verification badge should explain exactly what was checked and when.
What is included?
Use a like-for-like checklist: transfers, permits, accommodation, meals, guide/porter arrangements, supplied equipment, taxes and any optional activities. Ask what remains payable separately and in which currency.
Do not treat a quoted total as comparable until the inclusions, group basis, dates and itinerary match.
If the plan changes
Read cancellation, postponement and refund terms. Ask how weather, transport disruption, illness or an interrupted trek would affect the plan and costs. Confirm emergency arrangements and the limits of what the agency provides.
For insurance, ask the insurer directly about your itinerary, activities and relevant exclusions; an agency's general reassurance is not a substitute for the policy terms.
Use evidence carefully
Read reviews in context, including dates and the trip described. Ask a clear follow-up when a response is vague. A responsible discussion should help you understand the trip rather than pressure you into choosing quickly.
