Teahouse trekking in Nepal: what to ask before you go

Understand the overnight side of a Nepal trek: rooms, bedding, meals, water, charging and the facilities to confirm at each stop.

A teahouse is part of the itinerary, not a hotel category

On a teahouse trek, accommodation and meals come from lodges along the route rather than a fully carried camping setup. Nepal Tourism Board describes lodge accommodation in the main trekking areas. Facilities are not identical from one stop to another. NTB trekking overview

For a first trek, think about the overnight experience as carefully as the walking. Knowing what to expect makes it easier to pack, budget and decide which comforts matter to you. A package saying “teahouse accommodation” has not answered all those questions.

Build an overnight checklist

TopicAsk the operatorWhy the answer matters
RoomShared or private? How many people?A private room and a private bathroom are different arrangements.
BeddingWhat is provided, and is a sleeping bag needed?Your own overnight equipment depends on the stop and dates.
MealsWhich meals are included, and how are dietary needs handled?A daily meal allowance and an unrestricted menu are not the same.
WaterHow will drinking water be obtained and treated?Plan the arrangement instead of assuming a tap or shop is enough.
WashingWhich facilities are available, and is there an extra charge?A hot shower should not be assumed at every stop.
Power and connectionIs charging available, what does it cost, and what happens if it fails? You may need to reduce your dependence on devices.

Describe your needs without apologizing for them

If uninterrupted sleep, a particular diet or a private room matters to you, raise it before paying a deposit. Ask for the answer against the named overnight locations. “Usually available” and “confirmed for this booking” are different levels of certainty.

Make a small evening kit easy to reach: the clothing, hygiene items and light you expect to need after arriving. Keep your essential documents and personal items organized when moving between lodges. Agree with your operator which bag you carry and when you can access the main bag.

Compare comfort fairly

Two agencies may use the same route name while planning different overnight stops. Compare the stops and arrangements, not just the photographs. If the promised accommodation becomes unavailable, ask what the replacement would be and who decides.

The aim is not to recreate home on the trail. It is to understand the experience you are choosing. Read the packing checklist after you have those answers.
